Data Science Assistant

Report to: Director of AFREDAC

Hours: Full-time or flexible hours (5 Hours for 4 days/week)

Position Overview: AFREDAC is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Data Science Assistant to support our Data Science Communities of Practice and the Development, Data, and Analytics Unit. The ideal candidate will play a critical role in assisting data science team, developer team and will be facilitating data science community of practice engagement initiatives. This position offers an excellent opportunity to contribute to impactful health research and data science projects across Africa.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Data Analysis and Management:
    • Assist in collecting and organizing large datasets from various sources.
    • Conduct preliminary data analysis and generate reports to support research projects.
    • Maintain and update data repositories to ensure data integrity and accessibility.
  2. Support for Data Science:
    • Collaborate with data scientists and researchers to post a data science and health research topic on the Afredac Ubuntu platform.
    • Assist in the development and testing of data models and algorithms.
    • Prepare documentation and presentations for project updates and findings.
  3. Community Engagement:
    • Moderate the discussion forum around data science and health research on the platform.
    • Support and coordinate  events, workshops, and meetings for Data Science Communities of Practice.
    • Facilitate communication and collaboration among community members through online platforms and forums.
    • Assist in the development and dissemination of educational materials and resources.
  4. Technical Assistance:
    • Provide technical support to team members and community participants on data science tools and methodologies.
    • Assist in the setup and maintenance of data science software and infrastructure.
  5. Administrative Support:
    • Perform administrative tasks related to project management, including scheduling, documentation, and reporting.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Data Science, Statistics, Computer Science, Public Health, or a related field.
  • Strong analytical skills and experience with statistical software (e.g., R, Python, SAS).
  • Proficiency in data visualization tools (e.g., Tableau, Power BI) is a plus.
  • Excellent organizational and multitasking abilities.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Experience with community engagement or public health initiatives is preferred.
  • Knowledge of African public health issues and challenges is an asset.
