Position in the organisation
The Communication and Engagement Scientist will work remotely, report to the AFREDAC Director, and plan and implement the communication strategy alongside the whole AFREDAC team.
The post holder will also work closely with:
- AFREDAC Knowledge Management Unit to further develop, evaluate and implement training and capacity-strengthening activities.
- AFREDAC IT Development and Analytics Unit to support dissemination, communication and engagement of data science tools and outputs.
- AFREDAC Design and Content Management team to support the development of products and content that reflect AFREDAC’s culture, mission and vision.
Responsibilities and Duties
With support from the Unit Leads and the Director of AFREDAC, support the overall communication and engagement strategy, plan its implementation and monitoring.
- Understand the existing and Identify the additional AFREDAC audience and key messages relevant to health research and data capacity building in Africa.
- Use the AFREDAC media channels to increase awareness and inform about the programme.
- Develop, implement, and evaluate comprehensive communication strategies to promote public health initiatives.
- Create and disseminate engaging and informative content across various platforms, including websites, social media, newsletters, and press releases.
- Collaborate with public health experts, stakeholders, and community partners to design and deliver effective communication campaigns.
- Conduct research to identify target audiences and tailor messages to meet their needs and preferences.
- Monitor and analyse the effectiveness of communication efforts and adjust strategies as needed.
- Ensure that all communication materials are accurate, culturally sensitive, and aligned with organisational goals and public health standards.
Key Responsibilities
Multimedia
- To write creative content about AFREDAC as a new frontier to support health research and data science, as well as outcomes and impact of ongoing AFREDAC activities.
- To identify and exploit the achievements and key messages from the Ubuntu Platform to raise the profile of the Group at local, regional and international levels through the media and digital channels.
- To build and maintain relationships with AFREDAC’s researchers, supporting, encouraging and influencing them to assist and work to promote their research and data skills.
- Build, maintain and develop a strong network of contacts across all relevant media channels.
- Respond to enquiries from journalists with speed and accuracy, ensuring that each opportunity
is fully maximised. - In collaboration with the digital and content management team, to produce & distribute of multimedia materials, manage briefings, and emails, launch activities, and be responsible for drafting the Group’s media materials.
- Liaise with external partners to promote joint activity and ensure that AFREDAC’s culture and vision are appropriately represented.
Science communication service
- To research, write, edit and manage the production of AFREDAC products (articles, blogs, newsletters, publications).
- To work with the Design and Content Management Unit to develop and maintain quality public-facing research communications on the organisation’s website, social media, Ubuntu platform, presentations and communication products to meet the AFREDAC audience’s needs.
- Research, write and compile a weekly and monthly e-newsletter for AFREDAC to distribute in the AFREDAC Mailing list.
- Education:
- Minimum of a Master’s degree in Public Health (MPH), Health Communication, Public Relations, Journalism, or a related field.
- Health-related professionals with accrued training and experience will also be preferred.
- Work Experience:
- At least three years of relevant work experience in health communication, public health, or a related field after obtaining a Bachelor’s degree.
- Proven experience in developing and implementing communication strategies for health-related projects.
- Technical Skills:
- Strong understanding of public health principles and practices.
- Proficiency in digital communication tools and platforms, including social media, content management systems, and email marketing tools.
- Experience with data analysis and the ability to interpret and present data effectively.
- Communication Skills:
- Strong understanding of public health principles and practices.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
- Intermediate proficiency in French or any other main African Union languages is a plus.
- Ability to translate complex scientific information into clear, engaging, and accessible content for diverse audiences.
- Project Management Skills:
- Strong project management skills with the ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines.
- Experience in working with cross-functional teams and managing stakeholder relationships.
- Research and Analytical Skills:
- Ability to conduct qualitative and quantitative research to inform communication strategies.
- Experience in evaluating the impact and effectiveness of communication campaigns.
